Our Advent Theme: “The Songs of Advent”
Music is an important part of the holiday season...but don’t hit “play” on Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas quite yet! In the church, we don’t rush to Christmas, but instead savor the season of Advent. Advent isn’t just a few weeks tacked on before Christmas; it is a beautiful and vital season in its own right. During Advent, we are reminded that we are not bound by the same old lives and old patterns, but are instead open to a fresh infusion of grace from God. We celebrate new beginnings as we rekindle our expectancy and hope for God’s presence among us.
The gospel of Luke shares four songs in its early chapters that celebrate the power of God to create a new future among us. As we examine the songs of Mary (Luke 1:46-55), Zechariah (Luke 1:67-79), the angels (Luke 2:13-14) and Simeon and Anna (Luke 2:29-38), we’ll witness the graciousness of God’s transforming promises. Together, we’ll join with these singers and their songs as we celebrate the new life and fresh hope offered to us in Advent.
